WHY THIS BLOG?

Libertarianism is a school of thought, a political ideology, which was born in Britain in 18th century. It spread to America and became far more influential there, than in Britain. It inspired the great American Revolution and the founding fathers of America championed the cause of liberty. The movement derives its intellectual fuel from Austrian School of Economics'
Free Market Principles and Socio-political liberalism. It aims to maximise individual freedom while minimising government interference in politico-socio-economic space. There is a lot to Libertarianism but if you asked me to put its philosophy in one line it would be, "Government is part of the problem not the solution".

There have been some great LIBERTARIAN THINKERS, the likes of Ludwig von Mises, F.A.Hayek, Murray Rothbard, Karl Hess, Robert Nozick, Henry Hazlitt and many, many more. There are many countries with Libertarian parties, the largest and the most prominent being U.S.A. Others being Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Brazil, Germany, Norway, Italy, France, Greece. Costa Rica is the only country with a substantial chunk of Libertarians in the National Assembly (some 10%).

This movement is in its infancy in India but is quite well developed in U.S.A. although THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY has never come to power even there. The reasons are various, the discussions of which are beyond the scope of this blog. I leave that debate for an advanced stage when the movement is on a strong footing in India.
History has been a story of man's (and woman's too) constant struggles to free himself from the shackles of other men, who derive enormous benefits (both psychic and material) by virtue of their lording over other people.
All that is fine...Now lets come straight down to business!!!

Why this blog? What need does it serve?
This blog is meant to make a humble beginning en route to a destination quite far away. The aims are :

* To turn the ideological tide in Indian politics in favour of Libertarianism and prepare firm foundation for the establishment of a POLITICAL PARTY 10-15 years from now.

* To make people politically aware and more
importantly make them understand they are being shortchanged by the prevailing political class. That they deserve and hence, must demand more.
* To make people understand that political apathy is dangerous in any political system but more so in a democracy, because the present system bestows a legitimacy on the ruling regime that far surpasses that given to any regime in history.
* To present to the people an alternative to the existing system that is sustainable and just.

* To meet and exchange ideas in the politico-economic and social sphere with other intellectuals and enlist people to support the cause.

What's wrong with the present system? Well, to put it very bluntly, everything. Now, before you brand me a lunatic, let me explain my stand.

I completely agree that the pesent system is a lot better than all the systems that have existed till now i.e. monarchy, dictatorship etc. . But does that mean that we should be satisfied? Think about any great scientist and ask yourself what would have happened if he was satisfied with the status quo. Would the world, in aggregate, be better off? Clearly, the answer is no.

The founding fathers of Modern India wanted every man to take control of his
own life and become truly empowered, even if their immediate goal was freedom from the British. But somewhere along the line the system has been hijacked. We are being ruled by an increasingly authoritarian state. The difference between British Rule and Independence has to a large extent been just the colour of the skin of the ruling class.

From who runs our nation, to how they run our nation, to the shoddy "government" services that we recieve, to abject poverty, malnutrition and unemployment; open your eyes and look around and you will see problems all around.
Here is my agenda, my modus operandi in this space:

  • I will point out specific problems in society, some real & current issues and offer solutions.
  • There will be some general articles on Liberty, Free Markets, Politics and Philosophy etc. to lay the ideological foundation for the said POLITICAL PARTY.
What the readers must understand is that I alone can't make a significant difference, but collectively, we can change the world for the better. Cliched it might sound, but that doesn't make it any less true.

I understand that my brain can't think up all the ideas reqiured to bring about such monumental change. Hence I invite anybody who wishes to post a blog in my space to feel free to send me their script via email to buntygoojar33@rediffmail.com. The article must be intended to solve a real problem in the socio-political space and the solution must be sustainable. It has to be in the form of a debate. It must not violate anybody's Right to Self-ownership and Property Rights. I reserve the exclusive right to select or reject the article. Any rejection will be accompanied by reasons for the same.

I also intend to create a community on ORKUT the details of which will be given in one of my subsequent posts.

There is a lot to say, a lot to discuss....there are miles to go before India wakes up.

Look out for my first post titled "A Powerless Summer: Is Power Shortage Real?"

Included is a list of Libertarian Institutions from around the world from where you can source your ideological strength to begin with so that we do not have to reinvent the wheel.
and many more, but these would give you a good starting point.

Welcome to the world of blogging. It is a worthy cause that you fight for. I would like to know more about the topics you mentioned. It would be really useful if you link to the Institutions you mention so that I can garner more information.
Keep up the effort. I will support in whatever way I can.
